Electro Scan Inc. provides machine-intelligent contract services to accurately assess new and existing wastewater and stormwater pipelines and customer laterals, for accurate, fast, and unbiased reporting of leaks, in Gallons per Minute or Liters per Second.
Typical projects include:
Sewer Survey Evaluation Studies (SSES)
Studies comparing high-resolution Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) to Focused Electrode Leak Location (FELL) have found significant shortcomings in previous CCTV inspection resulting from under-reporting and miss reporting defects at joints and customer tap connections.
Cured-In-Place Pipe (CIPP) Watertightness Testing
CIPP has been a mainstay method of pipeline rehabilitation for nearly 50-years, representing nearly $100 billion in publicly funded pipeline repairs. Yet, the lack of independent testing solutions have allowed suppliers and contractors to limit their acceptance to visual inspection, as recommended by ASTM F1216, without the need to identify leaks or areas of water permeability (i.e. soakage). Given the USEPA’s growing requirement to annually report rehabilitation effectiveness, i.e. percent reductions in flows, Utilities can rely on Electro Scan to determine a baseline defect flow rate, expressed in Gallons per Minute or Liters per Second, with before & after flow ratings available, as soon as CIPP curing is complete.
Easily overlooked when using CCTV cameras to approve CIPP projects, is whether customer tap connections, requiring precision linin cuts to restore residential sewer services, are watertight. At a minimum, leaking customer tap connections found during pre-rehabilitation inspections, should never leak more after rehabilitation. But, restored connections often do as poor cuts damage lateral openings more than originally leakage.
Large Diameter Pipe Assessments
Electro Scan’s FELL represents the only viable technology that allows utilities to find and measure all pipe leaks located below the waterline, without the need for bypass pumping. Legacy multi-sensor probes, combining off-the-shelf sonar, laser, and floatable cameras, have over-sold & under-delivered on the promise of assessing large diameter pipes, especially promising to identify leaks. Diameters up to 66 inches (1676mm) can be inspected using FELL with each project requiring detail maps and onsite evaluations to determine access, flow rates, equipment insertion & removal, and proper health & safety precautions.
Hydrogeological Infiltration Analysis
Electro Scan’s partnership with Innovyze has brought a new level to rehabilitation selection. Helping utilities use Innovyze® InfoAsset® Planner combined with Electro Scan leak geometrics to identify the highest risk assets for sewer overflows, sewer back-ups, and possible contamination to local rivers, streams, and potable water aquifers. Hydraulic modelers have long complained over the user-unfriendly nature of NASSCO-based PACP coding and inability to allocate flow monitoring data to unreliable and inconsistently recorded visual inspections.
Sewer Force Mains (Rising Main) Assessments
Electro Scan’s multi-sensor approach saves utility owners on leak detection costs by providing three data sets per pipe insertion, allowing water managers to more quickly focus on the highest value leaks to repair, thus reducing overall system losses.
